Nail Infection Treatment

Do you have Toenail Fungus?

There are a number of factors that your doctor will use to determine if you should begin a particular nail infection treatment regimen.  Most infections are painless, especially in the early stages, so if the fungus is not causing any discomfort and you don’t mind the discoloration, your doctor may elect not to treat the problem at all.  Bear in mind though, a fungus left unchecked may deteriorate and eventually spread to surrounding skin tissue and other toenails.

If you have a preexisting condition, such as diabetes, your doctor will probably advise you to take action immediately to curb the spread and growth of the fungus. Toenail fungus infections can be very persistent so the sooner you are diagnosed, the sooner you can begin toenail fungus treatments.  Early nail infection treatment does not guarantee success, but is certainly helps!

Choosing a Toenail Fungus Treatment

There are numerous options to select from when choosing your nail infection treatment:

      Antifungal Pills –

Nail_infection_treatment

oral medication is usually reserved for the most persistent, severe, and difficult to treat cases of toenail fungus infections.  Your doctor will prescribe this type of medication as there are potential side effects.

Topical Antifungal Treatment – if you have a mild fungal infection a cream which is applied to the nail and surrounding skin is likely to be of benefit to you.

Surgical Toenail Removal – in severe cases it is sometimes necessary to remove the nail completely when the fungus simply will not go away; removal of the nail prevents any further spread of the fungus.

Natural Remedies – there are a number of natural remedies worth trying on mild fungal infections; try applying tea tree oil or oregano oil to the infected area.

Fungus Nail Infection Treatment

It is important to establish whether in fact you do have a nail fungus infection before starting any treatment plan, take advice from your doctor in this regard as some medical conditions can look like toenail fungus to the untrained eye.

Your doctor will invariably start you on the mildest toenail fungus cure available and will only suggest a more aggressive treatment plan if the infection doesn’t respond.

Patience is vital, no matter which nail infection treatment program you choose, it may take up to one year for your toenails to completely return to normal.

7 Ways to Use Lavender for Home Remedies

7 Ways to Use Lavender for Home Remedies

By Heather Ashare, MPH for DietsInReview.com

You might be surprised to learn that lavender is much more than an aromatic scent used to enhance soaps and candles. In fact, there are a number medicinal uses for lavender, as well as in cooking, that go back centuries.

Here is a list of just a few ways to use lavender:

Stress Relief

If you’ve ever inhaled a breath of fresh lavender your senses are immediately awakened by its soothing fragrance and its almost immediate ability to bring a sense of relaxation. Aromatherapists rely on lavender’s essential oil for calming nervous conditions like anxiety or stress. Burn a lavender candle or add a few drops of lavender essential oil into a carrier oil like olive oil, then apply a small drop to your wrists or across the clavicle. Breathe deeply and relax.

Skin Treatment

Lavender oil works as an antiseptic and anti-fungal, making it a natural treatment option for skin disorders, acne, scars, cuts, sunburns and psoriasis.

Reverse Hair Loss

One study found that people with alopecia areata, a disease that causes patchy hair loss, who put lavender oil on their scalps had significant hair re-growth compared to those who did not apply the oil.

Improve Sleep

Skip the prescription sleep medications and embrace the natural relaxation properties in lavender. Having a massage with lavender essential oil may improve the quality of your sleep, helping you to awaken well rested the next day.

Insect Repellant

To naturally protect yourself from summer bugs, add a few drops of lavender oil to a teaspoon of carrier oil and apply to your skin. Lavender contains geraniol, a compound that wards off biting bugs. Lavender can increase skin’s photosensitivity, so stay in the shade and wear your best sunblock.

Relieve Muscle Aches

Whether you gave it your all at the gym or yanked too many weeds out of the garden, try massaging lavender oil into achy joints and muscles to ease pain rather than popping pills. Just the smell of the lavender oil alone will help to take your mind off of your aching muscles.

Baking

Yes, you can even cook with lavender. In your next homemade batch of cookies or shortbread, add a tablespoon of dried lavender leaves to the batter. Your cookies freckled with soft purple leaves will look elegant and everyone will want in on the secret ingredient that turned plain sugar cookies into a culinary delight.

Get Rid of Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus infections are a huge concern for many people, no one wants to go around with discolored and deformed toenails, all of these people (an estimated 11% of Americans suffer with this ailment) are anxious for a fungal nail infection treatment plan that will work for them. Some fungal infections can actually break down the toenail causing discomfort. Even a mild infection, if left untreated, has the potential to degenerate into a much more serious condition, it is therefore important to get rid of toenail fungus in the early stages of the infection.

Natural Toenail Fungus Cures

There is a myriad of fungal nail infection treatments to choose from.  Some of them are very effective, and others don’t work much at all, this depends largely upon the individual’s response to the chosen treatment plan.  If you prefer to take the natural route, you may need to try a number of different methods until you find one that works for you as people and fungi respond better to some treatments than they do to others.

·         The application of oregano oil on an infected area can have a significant effect on toenail fungus. Combine two drops of oregano essential oil with one teaspoon of olive oil and coat the infected area with this mixture daily, you should see positive effects after three weeks as oregano has antibacterial and antifungal properties.

·         The “apple cider cure” is another commonly used toenail fungus cure. Soak your feet daily for approximately twenty minutes in a large bowl filled with equal parts of warm water and apple cider vinegar. Remove your feet and dry them thoroughly, it is very important that your feet are totally dry, use a hair drier on a low setting to complete the job.

·         When looking for a toenail fungus cure our focus goes into what we soak our feet in, or what we put on our toes, but as with any infection, it is just as important what we put into our body as it is what we put on our body. Boost your immune system by including good bacteria like that found in yogurt in your diet. Olive leaf extract has antifungal properties and can be taken in capsule form or drunk as a tea. Both of these additives will help your body fight off the fungus.

When to Begin Treatment

Get_rid_of_toenail_fungus

As always, be sure to check with your doctor before you begin testing out any nail infection treatment plan. Get rid of toenail fungus as soon as possible, curing your fungi nail will be much more successful if begun soon after infection has occurred.

What Does Nail Fungus Look Like?

Whether you have a mild or severe infection fungi nail is never a pretty sight.  Symptoms of a nail fungus infection include discoloration with thickened and cracked or crumbling toe nails.  The discoloration can range anywhere between a small whitish area to an overall yellow hue, in extreme cases the infected nail will turn brown in color.

Fungi Nail – When Should I See A Doctor?

Only a trained medical professional is qualified to diagnose a nail fungus infection so it is important to visit your doctor if you suspect that you have an infection. Your doctor will take a close look at your nails and if there is any question as to whether or not you have a fungal infection a small tissue sample will be taken from underneath your nail. This sample will then either be scrutinized by the doctor under a microscope, or sent it off to a lab for analysis. A correct diagnosis is very important as it is the first step in the get rid of nail fungus treatment plan.

How to Get Rid of Nail Fungus

After it has been established that you do have an infection your doctor will suggest a nail infection treatment plan. It is important that you find out as much as possible on the subject of fungal infections and treatments.  To get rid of nail fungus you need to be aware of your options as this will enable you to take an active role in the selection process of your treatment plan.

Once you have decided on a course of action – stay with it!  To treat toenail fungus takes dedication, it is a very persistent problem and much more difficult to cure than an infection of the fingernails, the reason being that fungi thrive in warm, dark, and moist areas (does that sound like your shoes?).

Slow the growth of fungus with a few easy adjustments to your everyday life.  Your feet need to be kept clean and dry, keeping them hidden away in hot and sweaty shoes all day doesn’t give your feet a chance to breathe!  If your feet get sweaty during the day, bring an extra pair of socks to change into; a clean, dry pair of socks can work wonders for in your quest to get rid of nail fungus.

How long will it take to get rid of Nail Fungus?

It may take a while to get rid of nail fungus, a nail infection treatment program can be a long and arduous process, but this depends upon the severity of the infection. You can suffer from damaged toenails long after the fungal infection is cured as it may take more than a year for your nails to grow out beautifully. Don’t lose hope; your patience and care will pay off in the end!

What is Fungi Nail?

A nail fungus infection occurs when a fungus attacks the skin underneath the nail, in the area called the nail bed.  Typically there are three different fungi that cause an infection; these three fungi can work alone or in concert with each other.

·         Dermatophytes are one of the most common types of fungi; it can grow on nails, skin and hair.  The most well known strain of this type of fungi is Trichophyton rubrum, commonly referred to as ‘athlete’s foot.’

·         Yeast is a fungus that is already present in the human body, if you experience too much yeast growth in your body a yeast infection can result and that could develop into a fungi nail infection.

·         Mold, which is usually found in the soil, can also trigger a fungi nail but unlike an ‘athlete’s foot’ infection, you are unlikely to catch this fungus from another person.

A fungi nail infection begins when a fungus comes in contact with the nail bed; you are especially vulnerable to an infection if your toenail is ingrown or injured. Unfortunately feet are a perfect environment for fungal growth.

Fungi Nail Symptoms

Symptoms of fungi nail vary greatly both in appearance and intensity.  The different types of fungal infections have varying symptoms, but common to all are discolored, misshapen and deteriorating toenails. These problems become worse if the toenail fungus infection is not treated.  What starts out as a small whitish blemish can soon deteriorate into a painful and unsightly problem requiring immediate attention.

Fungi Nail Prevention

Fortunately, there are several preventative measures that you can take in order to protect yourself from a fungi nail infection.

·         Cleanliness is the number one prevention method, keep your feet clean and dry as fungi thrive in a dark, moist environment.

·         Take an extra pair of socks if you know you’re going to be active on a hot day.  To keep your feet dry, change socks and sprinkle talcum powder on your feet when you feel moisture building up in your shoes.

·         Shoe selection is also important, wear sandals whenever possible.  If sandals are not appropriate, choose shoes made from natural materials that allow the feet to breathe and moisture to evaporate.

·         Always wear appropriate footwear when using a public shower or pool area.

·         Never share shoes, nail clippers, scissors, nail files or other hygiene utensils with other people, they may not know that they have a fungi nail infection and could pass their problem on to you.

·         Finally, do your utmost to protect your feet from injury.  An injury such as simply cutting a toenail too short could make you vulnerable to fungi nail

Natural Antifungal Properties of Olive Leaf Extract.

The Natural Antifungal Properties of Olive Leaf Extract.

Natural antifungal treatments are becoming increasingly important as yeasts and fungi become progressively resistant to conventional antifungal drugs.

Most antifungal drugs only inhibit the growth of fungi (fungistatic), which gives them opportunity to mutate and become drug-resistant.
The cell structure of fungi is similar to human cells, hence difficult to destroy without damaging human cells as well. Synthetic antifungal drugs thus tend to have serious side-effects.

Interesting fact:
Fungi resist drugs in a similar way to cancer cells. Some can simply pump the drug out again. Others mutate, and become immune to the drug or proliferate like cancer cells to dilute the effect of the drug.(1)
The natural antifungal olive leaf on the other hand, has the potential to destroy many kinds of fungus, or their sub-division of yeasts such as Candida Albicans.

With respect to fungi, the following are some of the known actions :

Fungi Hyphae

  • Interference with the production of amino acids within fungal cells needed for their survival.
  • Stimulation of phagocytosis (engulfing of microbial cells by your immune cells)(2).

Feedback from users has shown a wide scope of action against Candidiasis, Mycotic nails, Thrush and some other infections as illustrated by Some Case Histories.

What is the best policy towards fungal infections?

The best policy towards fungal infections is prevention.

While the immune system can and does overcome them while it is healthy and strong, an impaired immune system can lead to a long uncomfortable struggle making life a misery.
Serious immune problems like AIDS can result in fungal infections taking over in parasitic form resulting in extreme discomfort and death. Fungi reduce dead animals and people into the elements from which they are comprised, and are relentless unless stopped.

The best ways to avoid fungal infections is to build health and keep away from practices which infect you or suppress your immune system, for example:

Worthy Goals

  • Plan, work towards and maintain a healthy lifestyle, including eating a variety of wholesome home-prepared meals, getting enough sleep, sun and exercise, avoiding overindulgence in sugary and refined foods and beverages.
  • Set and pursue worthy life goals and keep away from stress-creators such as too much alcohol, immorality, recreational drugs and destructive company.
  • Avoid antibiotic drugs unless absolutely necessary. Most things can be overcome using a natural antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial such as olive leaf extract or other herbal extracts.

Certain antibiotics kill off gut bacteria which compete against and keep fungi in check. Once the bacteria are gone, the fungi proliferate and change from single-celled harmless forms to a parasitic network of filaments which imbed themselves in your mucous membranes and start to invade your body.

This is normally the starting point of problems such as Candida overgrowth.

  • Avoid taking steroids, birth-control pills and using IUD’s, all of which throw your body out of its natural balance and lower immunity.
  • Eat organic and fresh foods as far as your budget will allow. If you are able to, why not grow your own organic vegetables?
  • What is the best way to get rid of fungal infections ?

  • Minor infections can usually be dealt with by taking natural antifungal olive leaf extract, oregano oil or other suitable antimicrobial herbal extracts internally, or in creams and ointments in the case of skin infections.
  • If the problem is in the intestines or the female genital tract, a quality probiotic is important to restore a healthy balance of flora in the affected area.
  • Pinpoint the cause of the infection if possible and make a lifestyle change to prevent recurrence.
  • Candida Albicans

Possibly the most problematic and widespread fungal infection afflicting the western world, the family of Candida yeasts has developed a high resistance to most antifungal drugs and is commonly contracted in hospitals while patients undergo other surgical procedures.

People with compromised immune systems such as those undergoing aggressive chemotherapy treatment, organ or bone marrow transplants and receiving immunosuppressant drugs or those with autoimmune diseases such as AIDS are particularly vulnerable.

Olive leaf extract can be a valuable preventative natural antifungal supplement to be taken during some of these treatments. Most doctors are not familiar with olive leaf extract but should nevertheless be consulted if you wish to take it under these circumstances.

If an infection has taken hold, olive leaf extract is an excellent natural antifungal to take for candida.
Used in conjunction with a suitable diet and high quality probiotics it has proved itself a very successful Candida Albicans natural treatment. As it passes throughout the body it attacks candida cells wherever they are in the system. It may also be used in rotation with other natural antimicrobials as is sometimes the protocol in candida treatment.

We have noticed that treating Candida Albicans with olive leaf extract often results in Herxheimer’s reaction. This is a flare up of symptoms caused by the destruction of a large number of candida cells releasing stored toxins within them, and causing inflammation in adjacent tissues. This is a good sign, showing the treatment is working, but if uncomfortable the dosage can be lowered to slow down the process. Plenty of water should be taken to flush away the toxins.

    In conclusion

Preventing fungal infections is easier than getting rid of them, and getting rid of them permanently involves eliminating whatever caused them in the first place.
The good news is that as you rid yourself of the causes, health and wellbeing improves and life takes on a new quality. Your candida infection may turn out to be one of the best things that ever happened to you.

Home Remedies are Successful in Treating Toenail Fungus in Some Cases

Toenail FungusNo one likes the effect that Toenail Fungus has on their toenails. The damage and discoloration can become so severe that those affected with this problem usually try to hide it at all costs. Using a potent blend of natural oils is a very effective home remedy for mild cases of toenail fungus. Mix equal parts of tea tree, olive, and thyme oils together. Rub this blend into the toenail and allow the mixture to sit for 15 minutes. Gently scrub with a tooth brush to remove any topical fungal growth. Repeat this process for several weeks until cured.

Over the Counter Treatment for Toenail Fungus Work for Mild Cases

Toenail FungusThere are no quick fixes when it comes to the treatment of Toenail Fungus! A fungal spore can infect your toenail and begin to spread overnight, but when it comes to killing that same fungus it can take weeks or even months to eliminate the problem. The most common over the counter treatment for toenail fungus comes in the form of creams. When applying an anti fungal cream to the affected areas it is vital that you wear a pair of rubber gloves. If you apply the cream without gloves you risk spreading the fungal infection to your fingernails as well.
